Hospitalist Jobs The Growing Demand for Hospitalists Is one of the fastest growing medical specialties now facing shortage issues? Hospitalists barely existed a decade ago but external forces have caused hospital medicine to grow tremendously in recent years. In fact, about half of all U.S. hospitals employ or utilize Hospitalists, and about half of all managed care organizations operate Hospitalists programs. So what factors are driving today’s widespread need for Hospitalists?   Hospitalists programs started out in larger hospitals which are still increasing to meet needs. In addition, rural hospitals have recently added Hospitalists programs at noteworthy speed. One reason rural hospitals seem to be adding Hospitalists programs is to attract much needed primary care physicians who no longer want to care for hospital patients. These growing demands for Hospitalists in rural and metropolitan hospitals are further extending the already-short supply of today’s Hospitalists As a result, the Hospitalists demand has surpassed the supply of physicians.   While the addition of Hospitalists programs in rural hospitals has placed a greater demand for these physicals, there are also other factors to consider. One other factor would include the new work hour limits of resident physicians. Since resident physicians are now limited to the number of hours they can be present in teaching hospitals, many of these hospitals have filled the gap with Hospitalists Another reason for Hospitalists demand is nurse shortages. Hospitalists can provide better doctor-nurse relationships and communications which would result in stronger nurse retention rates within hospitals. The need for hospital efficiency which maximizes profit and increases the rate of production over time is yet another reason for Hospitalists demand. Hospitalists are the key to providing efficient patient care because they can make more beds available for surgical patients who offer higher profit margins than medical patients. Lastly, Hospitalists can ease the burden of private practice specialists. Fewer and fewer specialists are willing to take call resulting in a lack of inpatient coverage. However, Hospitalists programs are creating new options for specialists who prefer outpatient coverage only. As you can see, Hospitalists are in high demand throughout the country and are facing shortage issues. Hospitalists address issues which allow the healthcare industry to continue to provide care and are the solution needed for inpatient care. Since H ospitalists are the key to addressing several healthcare issues, Hospitalists programs are now growing or expanding into metropolitan and rural hospitals respectively. As a result, the near future shows no sign of decreasing the demand for Hospitalists.
