OB/Gyn Hospitalist Jobs

While many obstetricians divide their time between office and hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital is introducing an Obstetric Gynecology (OB/GYN) Hospitalist program, a service that allows hospital-based doctors to focus on providing care to patients in the labor and delivery unit. To support this initiative, Good Samaritan is working with Obstetrix Medical Group, a national physician group that specializes in caring for pregnant women.

"Hospital-based OB/GYNs narrow the focus of their practice to hospital medicine to provide women in labor with prompt and efficient, round-the-clock care," said Alan Fishman, M.D., Medical Director for the Obstetrix group in San Jose. "We work with the community OB/GYNs and will provide coverage as requested by them to enhance continuity of care for pregnant mothers and their infants. The program underscores Good Samaritan Hospital's commitment to quality in their Center for Women and Babies."

Good Samaritan Hospital CEO Bill Piché continued, "Sometimes an obstetrician is already delivering a baby at another hospital, or perhaps just tied up in traffic. Having an OB/GYN hospitalist program means pregnant women can be confident an experienced obstetrician will be delivering her baby, even if her own physician can't be present. That's peace of mind no other San Jose hospital can provide."

The OB/GYN Hospitalists provide enhanced coverage and a critical safety net to OB/GYNs in the community, during emergencies or when OB/GYNs are not physically present in the hospital. The movement toward hospitalist medicine improves access to specialist care and enhances patient safety and outcomes. Good Samaritan's OB hospitalist program will begin January 1, 2007.

The Society for Hospitalist Medicine (SHM) indicates that the continuous availability of on-site hospitalists increases communication with patients and can improve patient and family satisfaction. A report published in the Health Affairs journal in 2003 surveyed hospitals across the country and cited that 64 percent of California medical groups and 46 percent of groups nationwide employed hospitalists to coordinate care of hospitalized patients.

According to the SHM, approximately half of U.S. hospitals currently employ hospitalists in different subspecialties, a growing trend in healthcare aimed at providing expertise at the hospital and improving safety and quality of patient care. The number of hospitalists in the U.S. has nearly doubled in the past three years, increasing from 8,000 hospitalists in 2003 to 15,000 hospitalists in 2005, a number that is expected to double again in the next decade.
